JAMMU: Congress has questioned failure of the government to provide free ration to residents, as announced last month, while expressing serious concern over indifferent attitude of authorities of J&K UT administration towards stranded people in different districts and regions within J&K besides those in other states or waiting at Kathua borders after completing their quarantine periods. Questioning the government for delay in disbursement of free supply of ration to people, as announced last month, even after more than three weeks of lockdown, JKPCC Chief GA Mir said that poor people, who are without any earnings, are finding difficult it to purchase food items.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, Mir said, “Free ration should have been distributed immediately, although its quantity and items are very limited. Only 5 Kg rice and one Kg Dal is not enough for a family, and that too has been delayed by the government. As a result of the delay, a large number of poor people are sleeping empty stomach during lockdown.”
Mir said that the administration is indifferent towards hardships of stranded people, both within and outside UT, and there is total arbitrary exercise of power as well confusion at various levels. He said that those stranded within UT, are being allowed only on sole discretion of authorities while those outside J&K are holding protests and hunger strike for lack of proper response of authorities, even when they have completed necessary quarantine periods. The government should have shifted such people on completion of required quarantine period, he added.
Mir sought immediate disbursement of free ration to all poor people along with financial support besides release of pending wages to different categories of poor workers working as casual, need based, daily-wagers etc in different government institutions.
