JAMMU: A workshop on ill-effects of tobacco was organised for the officers and staff of Jammu Development Authority (JDA) in collaboration with International Union against TB and Lung Disease Voluntary Association.

Vice Chairman JDA, Mubarak Singh was the Chief Guest and J.K Anand Secretary JDA presided over the workshop. Dr. N.C Prabhakar was the resource person.

Dr Prabhakar said that India stands at 3rd place in the production of tobacco products and on second slot as its consumer globally. “Moreover, Jammu and Kashmir has high incidence of smoking as J and K is also becoming the Lung Cancer Capital of India due to increased smoking prevalence across all the sections of the society”, he added.

He said that in J and K more than 2.3 million people use tobacco, out of which 21.9 per cent use it by smoking. “About eight lakhs will die untimely death due to serious tobacco related diseases”, he cautioned.

Dr. Prabhakar explained the objective of the workshop and steps taken by the government regarding National Tobacco Control Programme.

Dr. Sanjay Turki District Health Officer Jammu made presentation regarding ill effects of tobacco consumption.

Munish Sharma Advocate and Madan Chib, senior Principal representing the Education Department also spoke on the occasion.

Mubarak Singh stressed on the need for implementation of COTPA and assured full cooperation and help in connection with implementation of said programme.
