Dear Editor,
Through the columns of your esteemed paper I would like to highlight a lustrious decision taken by senior citizens of Udhampur while celebrating “World Senior Citizen Day”, to establish a “Senior Citizens Club” at Jagriti Old age Home” Udhampur. Senior citizens clubs provide a relaxed environment where people can enjoy the company of others and participate in a range of social activities. Although we had some other clubs such as: Lions Club, but it was felt that they are not catering to the exclusive essentialities of senior citizens. A senior citizen club provides the physical presence of elderly around and provides an avenue where they could mingle with same aged peers and enjoy themselves. There is definitely a different kind of enjoyment in socializing and being friends with people in a similar life stage. The environment in such clubs provides lovely sense of fulfillment and a sense of empowerment. Commingle of elderly at such a club will not only get a new social circle, but also get smiles and laughter back in their lives. It’s a place where members come to get fit, meet like minded people and share their life experiences that flash back in the community. Activities at the club that include fitness exercises, group meditation, mind stimulation, book reviews, community outreach, and talks on health management becomes treasure trove for the next generation to bring surprising changes in attitude and behavior towards this fraternity of senior citizens. It is a place to practice social experiment to improve the quality of life of senior citizens. Senior Citizens Clubs serve as a gateway to the nation’s aging network-connecting older adults to vital community services that can help them stay healthy and independent. The vast experience of life of Senior citizen offers a wide variety of programs and services towards mankind and such clubs becomes fountain heads.
